BROOKINGS, S.D. - The University of Mobile Indoor Track and Field program was well represented this season in the 2022 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships as five Rams competed in the three-day championship meet in Brookings, South Dakota over the weekend. The women's team at Mobile saw three compete in the women's events at nationals while two from the men's team at UM competed in the men's events. NAIA Nationals was held at South Dakota State University in Brookings. The championships took place inside the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex from March 3-5, 2022.
On the women's side, Anna Cabrera was the lone Ram to compete on the opening day of the championships. Cabrera competed in the pentathlon at nationals where she broke her own school record at Mobile with 3,334 points. Cabrera's totals placed her in the top 10 at 10th overall out of 16 competitors across the NAIA. She was the only student-athlete to compete in the pentathlon from the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC).
The following day, Cabrera, as well as teammate Latavia Jack from the women's team at Mobile competed in 60 meter events. Cabrera competed in the 60 meter hurdles event where she recorded a time of 9.14 seconds and placed 29th overall. Latavia Jack competed in the 60 meters dash preliminaries and broke her previous record with a new personal best of 7.62 seconds. Jack's time earned her a ninth-place finish, missing the finals the next day by just one spot.
Fedra Florentin was the final Ram to compete in the national championships over the weekend, competing in the shot put event on the final day. The freshman placed 17th overall with a mark of 12.54 meters and was one of four freshman to earn a trip to nationals in the shot put event across the NAIA.
On the men's side of the championships, Joseph Moses III and Donald Evans III earned trips to nationals in running events with Moses III competing in the 60 meters dash preliminaries and Evans III qualifying in the 200 meters dash. Moses III placed 31st overall in the 60 meter preliminaries with a time of 6.97 seconds. He managed to qualify for nationals in his first year with Mobile.
Due to minor soreness over the weekend, Donald Evans III was unable to start or compete at nationals this year. The senior can hold his head high, however, as he earned his first trip to nationals in his collegiate career while in his final season with Mobile.
All five Rams, along with the Mobile coaching staff led by head coach Andy Canegitta, will fly home to Mobile, Ala. on Sunday and prepare for the 2022 outdoor track and field season opener on Mar. 11 in the South Alabama Invitational.
