TALLADEGA, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday evening, Nov. 29, defeating Talladega College in a conference game on the road, 60-57. Tuesday's game against the Tornadoes of Talladega College is just the second conference game of the season for Mobile, improving their current SSAC record to 1-1, while the overall record on the season improves to 3-7. The loss to the Rams is just the second loss for Talladega in six games played on the season.
Rams Grab Much Needed W
Similar to previous games, Mobile came out strong to start the game, having the edge at the end of the first quarter by two points over the Tornadoes. Talladega managed to outscore Mobile in the second quarter 18-13, however, taking a 31-28 lead to halftime.
In the second half, both Mobile and Talladega recorded their strongest 10 minutes of the game in the third quarter, with Talladega outscoring the Rams, 19-17. Entering the final quarter with a 50-45 lead, Mobile's defense stepped up big in the fourth and held the Tornadoes to single digits. Meanwhile, Mobile put up 15 points in the final 10 minutes to earn the 60-57 comeback victory.
The Rams finished with a 45% shooting line from the floor and were much better from the free throw line, making 13 of 18 attempts for a season-best 72% free throw percentage. Additionally, the Rams connected with five three-point shots, with Erica Jones and Claire Worth each making two. Jones went on to lead all players with 20 points and was two rebounds shy of a double-double. Jones currently leads Mobile by averaging 13.7 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per contest.
Mobile newcomer Cosette Balmy mixed in another solid offensive game, tallying 10 points against Talladega. In Balmy's last three games played, she has managed to score at least eight points in each game, while shooting 50% from the floor. In addition, Balmy led Mobile with four steals and tied teammate Rachel Leclerc with a team-high four assists, while Leclerc tallied eight points in the win.
The Mobile defense forced 15 Talladega turnovers in Tuesday's victory and scored 14 points off those takeaways.
Finally Back Home in the Pharr
After seven-straight regular season games on the road, Mobile will return home to Pharr Gymnasium for just their second home game of the season on Saturday, Dec. 3. Mobile will host conference foe Loyola University (La.) on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. CT tip-off, with the Rams coming out victorious in the last meeting during the 2021-22 season, 60-53. Saturday's matchup is the first of two regular season games between Mobile and Loyola.
