University of Mobile Beach Volleyball Begins 2022 Season 2-0

Mobile Faces Two Opponents on the Road Over the Weekend to Start 2022 Season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Beach Volleyball program, led by head coach Jon Campbell, opened the 2022 season this past weekend in Montgomery, Ala. in just their second year as a sponsored sport at the University of Mobile. Mobile battled both St. Andrews University and Huntingdon College, a NCAA Division II opponent, on Saturday, Feb. 19 to begin the year and managed two wins over the opposition. Due to a small amount of beach volleyball programs in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC), Mobile joined as a member of Florida's Sun Conference this season, a conference that features teams like Keiser, Webber International, Southeastern, and more.

The Rams started the afternoon on Saturday with a 5-0 sweep over St. Andrews University. Mobile's No. 1 seed of Abby Andrews and Brinkley Hearn won their match against the Knights' top seed in three sets, 21-8, 19-21, 15-9. Twin sisters Layton Adams and Aspen Adams are the second-seed for Jon Campbell's beach volleyball squad and also earned a three-set victory with the scores of 21-23, 21-19, 15-12. Overall, four of Mobile's five wins over St. Andrews went three sets while the five-seeded duo of Melea Meadows and Veronica Makovey swept their competition in two sets, 21-9, 21-19.

In the later match against Huntingdon College, the Rams took a 3-2 match victory on the Eagles' home court. Despite the Mobile top-seed of Andrews and Hearn going down in two sets, the Adams sisters swept their opponents in straight sets, 23-21, 21-14. The fourth-seeded pair of Madison Bergeron and Jordan Wood joined Layton and Aspen Adams with a victory, winning in three sets, 21-18, 14-21, 15-12. Melea Meadows and Veronica Makovey was the match-clincher for the Rams, once again winning in two sets, 21-13, 21-9.

On the afternoon, Layton Adams tallied 14 kills and 10 service aces while sister Aspen managed 17 kills and three service aces. Melea Meadows recorded 13 kills and six aces while teammate Makovey tallied a team-high 25 kills.

After beginning the season 2-0, the Rams will play their first two home matches of the beach volleyball schedule on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 11:00 a.m. CT and 2:00 p.m. CT. Mobile is scheduled to face conference rival William Carey University in both matches on Tuesday.
