UM Women's Soccer Works Draw with No. 22 Georgia Gwinnett

Second Half Goal for Mobile Avoids Loss to Ranked Opponent on Saturday

THE JUNGLE SOCCER COMPLEX | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Soccer team returned to non-conference action over the weekend and battled No. 22 Georgia Gwinnett College to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 7. The Grizzlies of Georgia Gwinnett were favored to win entering Saturday, ranking No. 22 in the latest top 25 ratings in the NAIA Division. However, unranked Mobile survived over 20 shot attempts by the Grizzlies' front, while scoring the equalizing goal in the second half to earn the draw.

Saturday's draw is Mobile's fourth of the season, second consecutive, as the overall record moves to 6-3-4 this season. Additionally, the draw with Georgia Gwinnett on Saturday makes this the third-straight season the two teams have battled to a tie.

Match Recap: Rams Tie Grizzlies Again

Georgia Gwinnett hit the scoreboard first on Saturday, with Kendra Davis giving the Grizzlies the lead with a goal in the 20th minute. Davis' goal came from a cross from teammate Caroline Andersen that eventually bounced past Mobile starting goalkeeper Ebba Elweroth. Despite 11 first half shots for Georgia Gwinnett, the lone goal became the only goal scored in the first half.

In the second half, miscommunication between Georgia Gwinnett's keeper and defenders led to Raegan Latiolais scoring the equalizer in the 50th minute for Mobile. The Grizzlies' keeper Matilda Johansson attempted a pass to one of her defenders, but instead found the boot of Latiolais who rocketed the ball to the back corner of the open net. Latiolais' match-tying goal is her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

From there, the match ended in a 1-1 draw for the second-straight season. In last year's match, the Rams tied the match in the 56th minute.

Georgia Gwinnett took a total of 21 shots in the draw on Saturday, but could only muster the one first half goal. Seven of the Grizzlies' shots were on target as Ebba Elweroth picked up six saves in just her fourth match played this season, with five of those saves coming in the second half alone. For the Rams, Mobile took eight shots, with four being recorded on-goal. Georgia Gwinnett came away with three saves and recorded a 5-3 corner kick differential over Mobile.
