TUSKEGEE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Basketball team suffered the first loss of the season on Monday night, Nov. 13, falling 74-62 to Tuskegee University (Ala.) on the road. Monday's game against the Golden Tigers marked the third consecutive non-divisional game for Mobile, with two counting towards the regular season schedule. The Rams are coming off a victory over NCAA D-III's Birminghan Southern (Ala.), but fell by 12 points to Tuskegee just five days later, who calls the NCAA D-II home.
The loss drops the Rams' overall record 4-1 this season under first-year head coach Sydney Westry, with conference play scheduled to begin later this week.
Game Recap: Mobile's Strong First Half Not Enough
Mobile opened Monday's game by outscoring Tuskegee across the first two quarters, tallying 18 points in each quarter andshooting 41% from the floor in the process. The Rams led the Golden Tigers 36-29 at halftime. However, the Mobile offense slipped in the third quarter as the team only managed to make four of 13 total shots coming out of halftime. Meanwhile, Tuskegee came out of the break strong, scoring 21 points in the third quarter, while later adding 24 points in the final 10 minutes of the game. Tuskegee shot 50% in the second half, outscoring Mobile 45-26 after the Rams could only muster 15 points in the fourth.
Mobile finshed Monday's defeat with a 38% shooting line, making just two of 14 three-point attempts. The Rams were out-rebounded 46-37, while committing 14 total turnovers in the full 40 minutes. For Tuskegee, the Golden Tigers's big second half led the team to the win on their home floor, improving to 2-1 this season.
Alanna Donaldson led the charge offensively for Mobile, scoring a season-high 21 points. Donaldson picked up three assists, two rebounds, and a steal in the loss, and was followed by Erica Jones and Braylee McMath who each scored 10 points against Tuskegee. Monday's game was the first game this season that saw Jones score less than 20 points in a game. For McMath, the junior led the team with four steals.
SSAC Play Set to Begin
With Mobile dropping the first game of the season on Monday, the Rams have a quick turnaround as the SSAC portion of the 2023-24 schedule begins on Thursday, Nov. 16. Mobile is set to host Thomas University (Ga.) on Thursday, scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. CT tip in Pharr Gymnasium.
Two days later, the Rams will host Faulkner University (Ala.) for a 12:00 p.m. CT start in the Pharr.
