NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Mobile Women's Basketball team collected win number 10 on the 2023-24 season on Monday evening, Dec. 11, defeating Southern University of New Orleans (La.) 79-43 to improve to 10-2 this year. In the win, Mobile dominated in all four quarters, never trailing the Knights for the team's second-straight non-conference win against a program from the New Orleans region. Mobile defeated Dillard University (La.) at home just two days prior.
Additionally, senior Erica Jones managed a career night against SUNO, one game after the Birmingham, Ala. native surpassed 1,000 career points in her collegiate career.
Game Recap / Box Score Highlights
Mobile opened Monday's meeting with the Knights by scoring 22 points through the first 10 minutes, allowing 18 SUNO points in the process. Following the big offensive quarter by both teams, the Rams stepped up defensively in the second quarter by holding SUNO to just five points in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Meanwhile, Mobile's offense added 12 more points in the second to take a 34-23 lead to halftime. Erica Jones led the Rams with 14 points in the first half, 12 coming in the first quarter alone as Mobile shot north of 40% from the floor in both quarters played.
In the second half, the Rams played their best quarter of the entire game, scoring 25 points in the third, while holding SUNO to just 12. Similar to the first quarter, Jones scored 12 points alone to lead all players. Up 59-35 entering the fourth quarter, Mobile put the game away in the final 10 minutes by recording a 20-6 run in the fourth. Mobile eventually earned the 36-point win, the largest margin of victory yet for Mobile during the season.
Erica Jones eventually finished with a career-high 33 points in the win, adding 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Jones made 14 of 17 total shots against SUNO, while knocking down all five free throw attempts. In addition, Jones added two assists and led Mobile with four steals in the game. Following her big night, Jones is averaging over 18 points per contest, shooting just under 50% from the floor on the season.
Alanna Donaldson joined Jones in putting together a good offensive night, with the first-year Ram scoring 17 points. Donaldson finished one rebound shy of a double-double and added five assists. Braylee McMath also managed five assists, scoring 10 points against the Knights.
Overall, Mobile shot over 48% from the field across all four quarters, making 33 total shots as a team. Additionally, the Rams finished 10-for-12 at the free throw line and forced 25 SUNO turnovers on the defensive side. Mobile came away with 11 steals, finishing the game with 25 points off turnovers. For SUNO, the Knights only shot 28% in the loss to the Rams.
Returning to SSAC Action
Mobile is set to return to SSAC play later this week, traveling to Blue Mountain, Miss. on Thursday, Dec. 14 for an evening game against Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.). Thursday's game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
