MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Beach Volleyball team competed for just the second time during the 2023 season on Saturday, Feb. 18, battling two NCAA Division III opponents in Berry College (Ga.) and Huntingdon College (Ala.). Mobile opened the afternoon with a 4-1 loss to Berry College in the Huntingdon Beach Tournament, and followed with another 4-1 loss to host-team Huntingdon in the evening. With the two losses, Mobile's overall record to open the year falls to 1-3.
Saturday Recap
In the first match of the afternoon, Mobile's lone win against Berry came from the top-seeded pair of Aspen Adams and Layton Adams. The Adams sisters defeated the opposition in straight sets 21-17, 21-19 to start the match off strong for Mobile. However, Berry managed to sweep Mobile in flights two, four, and five, with the Rams' No. 3 seed of Danielle Pote and Haley Jones forcing three sets in the third flight. Pote and Jones fell by just two points in the first set, bouncing back in set two with a two-point win of their own, 21-19. In the deciding set, Pote and Jones fell, 15-9.
Later on Saturday, Mobile then faced off with Huntingdon College, who earned victories in the top-four matches played. Mobile's lone win came from the fifth flight of the lineup, with two freshman in Lexi Gillette and Emily Osborne earning a 21-15, 21-18 victory. Through the top four flights, the Hawks dominated, never allowing a set win for Mobile.
SUN Conference Opener
After a 1-3 start to the season, Mobile is now set to open up conference play next weekend as the Rams compete in the SUN Conference South Pod Tournament on Feb. 24-25. Mobile is scheduled to play St. Thomas University (Fla.) and Ave Maria University (Fla.) on Friday, Feb. 24 at 11:00 a.m CT and 3:00 p.m. CT, and will follow both matches with a 9:00 a.m. CT match against Florida Memorial University the next day.
All three matches are conference matches, with the tournament being held in Kenner, La.
