Women's Soccer Earns First Road Win of Season on Tuesday Evening

Mobile Cruises Past Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Miss.

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The University of Mobile Women's Soccer team scored the first road victory of the 2023 season on Tuesday evening, Aug. 29, defeating non-divisional opponent Mississippi University for Women, 3-1. The win for Mobile was a nice bounce-back as it comes on the heels of a loss to LSU-Alexandria last weekend. Through three matches, the Rams have opened the season with a 2-1-0 overall record.

Match Recap: Rams Shut Down Owls

Mobile opened up the scoring early in Tuesday's match with MUW, with sophomore Raegan Latiolais tallying her first goal of the season in the 11th minute. Latiolais leads the Rams in shots taken with 10 this season. Later in the first half, Sophie Roberts pushed across Mobile's second goal of the match to take a 2-0 lead to halftime. Roberts' goal came in the 41st minute and is her first on the young season. The offensive attack for the Rams dominated as Mobile out-shot the Owls 11-0 through the first 45 minutes.

Out of halftime, Mobile's offense scored another goal for insurance in the 62nd minute, coming from Bailey Bronner, who now shares the team lead in goals scored with two on the year. Looking like a shutout victory was promising, miscommunication late eventually led to an own goal on Mobile in the final minute of the match to give the Owls a point on the scoreboard. From there, Mobile managed a 3-1 victory to earn the first road win of the season.

Overall, Mobile won the shots battle with a 16-1 advantage through the full 90 minutes. Goalkeeper Juliana Gomez played all 90 minutes in the net for Mobile, recording just one second half save. Head coach Brian Person emptied his bench in the second half of the match and played a total of 22 players on the roster during Tuesday's victory. Raegan Latiolais and Izzabella Payne led the team with four shots each in the two-goal win.

Returning to the Jungle on Friday

After two consecutive road matches, Mobile is scheduled to return home to the Jungle this upcoming Friday, Sept. 1 for a rescheduled match against Talladega College at 4:00 p.m. CT. Mobile and Talladega were originally scheduled to kickoff the 2023 season back on Aug. 18, but eligibility and travel issues on Talladega's side forced an early postponement.
