AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Basketball team secured a commanding 83-52 victory over Southern University at New Orleans (La.) on Thursday, Nov. 21, improving the overall record on the season to 5-2. The dominant performance over SUNO is Mobile's second win over the Knights this year, defeating the non-conference foe by 40 points back on Nov. 6 in New Orleans, La.
Game Summary
Mobile established control early in Thursday's contest, outscoring SUNO 19-14 in the first quarter and extending the lead to 39-25 by halftime. A strong defensive effort by Mobile limited SUNO to just 11 second-quarter points, while holding the Knights to a sub-40% shooting mark across the first half.
In the second half, the Rams exploded in the third quarter, outscoring SUNO, 31-9. The efficient shooting, including four consecutive three-pointers on four possessions, widened the gap significantly. Despite SUNO's 18-point effort in the fourth quarter, the Rams' lead proved too much as Mobile cruised to the 83-52 victory.
Mobile ended Thursday shooting just under 43% from the floor, making seven threes and finishing 10-for-19 from the free throw line. In the rebound battle, Mobile collected 53 rebounds compared to SUNO's 36, and forced 21 turnovers from the Knights. The Rams scored 22 points off giveaways, tallying 10 total steals.
Key Performers
Verd Fontaine dominated inside with 11 points and 11 rebounds for Mobile, securing her first double-double as a Ram. Her totals against SUNO are both career-highs in her two-year career with Mobile. Braylee McMath also contributed 11 points in the win, adding a pair of steals and totaling four assists, while Miriam Oldarcre finished with nine points and four rebounds.
Mobile saw great production from off the bench, with the reserves totaling 37 points. Newcomers Luisa Monsalve and Hannah Benoit each scored eight points, while McKenna Sinon tallied six points off two made three-pointers. For Monsalve, the transfer junior added six rebounds, five assists, and three steals in 26 minutes of playing time.
Rivals Meet
Mobile is set to return to action in Pharr Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 23, hosting conference rival William Carey (Miss.) in the process. Saturday's game is scheduled to tip off at 12:00 p.m. CT.
