Beach Volleyball Collects First Win of Season During Home Opener

Rams Knock Off Huntingdon at Home

MOBILE, Ala. The University of Mobile Beach Volleyball team improved to 1-2 during the young 2024 season on Wednesday evening, Feb. 28, defeating Huntingdon College (Ala.) 4-1 in a non-divisional match at home. Mobile, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, opened the 2024 campaign last weekend on the road in Kenner, La., which saw the Rams fall to both William Carey (Miss.) and Loyola (La.) in two SUN Conference matches. However, Mobile responded well with the season's first victory over the Huntingdon Hawks in front of a large crowd at home on Wednesday.

How It Happened

The match opened with the No. 4 and No. 6 seeds seeing action in the bright sunlight, with Mobile's fourth-seeded pair of Jordan Wood and Emma Todd dominating in a two-set win. Wood and Todd tallied a 21-10, 21-7 win to hand Mobile the first point of the match. In the exhibition match, which does not count on the final score, the sixth-seeded duo of Kendel Lee Frazer and Haley Jones came away with a three-set win, 11-21, 21-19, 15-10.

Later, Mobile went up 2-0 after Tatum Beech and Emily Osborne earned a two-set victory in the fifth-seeded match, winning, 21-16, 21-9. The Hawks did manage to earn their first and eventually only match win of the evening in the third flight, with Huntingdon defeating Mobile's three-seed of Emma Hampton and Gabby Sheffield, 25-23, 21-13.

In the final two matches of the night, and with high winds and chilly air rolling in, Mobile's top two seeds cruised to victories over the Hawks, with both seeds earning two-set wins. From the No. 2 seed, Lexi Gillette and Dazsha Dean produced a 21-13, 21-14 win, while Mobile's top-seeded pair of Aspen Adams and Layton Adams earned a 21-19, 21-10 win.

Overall, the Rams won five of six matches played on Wednesday, with the final match score being recorded as 4-1.

Rams Take Flight

Mobile is scheduled to return to SUN Conference action later this week with three conference matches in the south pod tournament. The Rams will fly to Ave Maria, Fla. for two matches on Friday, Mar. 1, starting at 7:00 a.m. CT against St. Thomas University (Fla.). The tournament concludes on Saturday, Mar. 2 with a 7:00 a.m. CT match against Florida Memorial University (Fla.).
