HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Mobile Beach Volleyball team competed in the three matches over the weekend, with the Rams partaking in the University of Southern Mississippi's 2024 Beachburg Invite in Hattiesburg, Miss on Mar. 29-30. Mobile finished the weekend with a 2-1 record, with the lone loss of the tournament coming against host-school Southern Miss on Friday. Meanwhile, the Rams managed strong wins over conference foe Loyola (La.) and NCAA D-I's Nicholls State (La.) at the weekend tourney, improving the overall record on the season to 7-9 with one regular season match remaining.
Weekend Notables
Mobile opened the tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss. against Southern Miss on Friday morning, eventually dropping all five sets to the Golden Eagles. The Rams forced three sets across the first and fourth flights of the lineup, but were unable to grab any victories in the match. Later on Friday, Mobile bounced back and came up with a 3-2 comeback win over Loyola University in a non-conference matchup after dropping the first two matches to the Wolf Pack.
Down 2-0 against Loyola, Mobile's top three flights in the lineup earned victories to seal the 3-2 win. Dazsha Dean and Lexi Gillette swept Loyola's top pair 21-19, 21-16 in their first weekend as Mobile's top seed in the lineup, while Mobile's No. 3 seed of Gabby Sheffield and Emma Hampton earned the Rams' second sweep with a 21-17, 21-18 win. Down to the match-decider, Mobile's second-seeded pair of Aspen Adams and Layton Adams stepped up and earned a thrilling three-set victory. The Adams sisters claimed a 21-17, 18-21, 15-10 victory to decide the match and give Mobile the team's first win of the weekend.
The following day, Mobile notched another 3-2 win, this time coming against NCAA Division I's Nicholls State. The two teams split the first two matches played, with Jordan Wood and Emma Todd winning 21-15, 21-15 from the fourth flight in the lineup. Lexi Gillette and Dazsha Dean then followed with a 21-12, 21-13 win as Mobile's top-seeded pair to put the Rams up 2-1, and Aspen Adams and Layton Adams then claimed the match win for the second consecutive match after earning a 17-21, 21-13, 15-11 comeback win in the second flight. Despite Nicholls claiming a win in the third flight, the match was already decided as the Rams came up with a 3-2 win.
Senior Day
Mobile will wrap up the home and regular season portions of the 2024 schedule on Tuesday, Apr. 2, hosting crosstown rival Spring Hill College (Ala.) at the UM Sand Volleyball Courts. Tuesday's match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT, with five seniors being honored for Senior Day pregame.
