THOMASVILLE, Ga. - It was a weekend to forget for the University of Mobile Baseball team as the Rams dropped all three games played against Thomas University (Ga.) in the final regular season road trip of the 2024 campaign. Mobile enters the final weekend of the regular season with a 16-18 overall record on the year, while holding a 14-13 SSAC record.
The weekend set opened on Friday afternoon, Apr. 19 with a doubleheader, which saw the Night Hawks begin play with a 12-2 victory over Mobile across game one. The Rams were held to just four hits in the seven-inning loss, with Sam Mansell being responsible for both runs driven in. Meanwhile, Thomas collected 13 hits and forced Mobile to use four pitchers in the game. Mobile did not see a pitcher complete two innings in the 10-run defeat.
The big win to open the series seemed to set the tone for the rest of the weekend for Thomas as momentum stayed on the Night Hawks' side. In game two, Thomas earned an 11-6 win over Mobile after the Rams pushed across three runs in the top of the first inning to begin play. After Mobile went up 3-0, Thomas rattled off 10 runs throughout the middle innings to take a 10-3 lead. Mobile cut into the deficit some late in the game with three more runs, but Thomas' offensive explosion proved to be too much in the end.
Thomas out-hit Mobile 14-7 in game two, with J.T. Lastorka highlighting the day at the plate for the Rams with a three-run home run in the first inning. Lastorka finished 2-for-4 in the game two loss. Mobile relied on just three arms on the mound in the nightcap on Friday, with nine of the 11 runs scored being earned runs on the Mobile pitching staff.
On Saturday, Apr. 20, the Rams attempted to salvage the series with a win before heading home to south Alabama. Similar to the second game of the series, Mobile hit the scoreboard first with two runs in the first inning, following that with three runs in the second to go up, 5-0. However, Thomas answered with five runs of their own across the second and third innings, tying the game 5-5 heading into the middle innings.
Mobile grabbed the lead back with single runs in the fourth and seventh frames, but the Night Hawks tied the game once more in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runs. From there, the game went to extra innings to decide a victor. After Mobile was kept off the scoreboard in the top of the 10th, Thomas walked off Mobile with a two-run homer in the bottom half to seal the sweep over the Rams. Both teams recorded 14 hits a piece, with Mobile losing a heartbreaker in the series finale.
Offensively for the Rams, Sam Bowman recorded a two-run homer in the first inning, while Peyton Bell cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the second. Sam Mansell later collected another RBI in the series with a single up the middle to keep the game close. Three Rams touched the rubber on the mound as Thomas relied on three-straight home runs to tie the game in the seventh and eventually win the game in the 10th to earn the series sweep.
One Series Left of Regular Season
Mobile is scheduled for just one more series during the 2024 regular season portion of the schedule, coming against Stillman College (Ala.) at home on Apr. 25-26. The series is scheduled to begin with a single game on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. CT, with a doubleheader to follow on Friday at 1:00 p.m. CT.
Friday is Senior Day as several seniors will be honored pregame.
