JACOBS FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. - In an offensive explosion at Jacobs Field on Friday night, Feb. 15, the University of Mobile Baseball team powered past Thomas University (Ga.) in walk-off fashion to open the SSAC Baseball Series of the Week, securing a thrilling 16-15 victory in the process. Friday's game was the conference opener for both Mobile and Thomas, which saw the Rams improve to 1-0 in the SSAC and 5-4 overall on the young 2025 season.
Water Leaks, Walks, and a Walk-Off
Mobile's bats exploded for 16 runs on 13 hits in Friday's win, overcoming Thomas' late push in the ninth inning where the Night Hawks rattled off six runs to tie the game. In addition, both teams had to overcome slow stoppage between each inning as the Mobile coaching staff and umpires were forced to address a slow, but consistent water leak from one of the underground pipes behind the pitcher's mound. Fortunately, the leak did not cause a long delay on Friday night and the two conference foes were able to complete the game.
The Rams took control early with a massive nine-run first inning, later adding an additional run in the second frame to lead, 10-0. However, Thomas began chipping away at the lead across the middle innings against the Mobile bullpen, using walks as an advantage. In total, the Mobile pitching staff allowed 11 walks on Friday night, while also hitting four batters. Thomas managed 12 hits, using a ninth-inning error on the Mobile defense to tie the ballgame with two outs on the board.
In the bottom half of the ninth, Mobile's Cameron Brock laced a double to the gap and opened the inning in scoring position. Brock then attempted a steal of third base, in which case the Thomas catcher overthrew his teammate at third. The costly error cost the Night Hawks the game as Brock came charging in at home as the winning run.
Friday's game lasted three hours and 59 minutes, with the two teams combining for 25 hits, 31 runs, and 20 walks.
Inside the Box Score
Mobile was led by newcomer Zion Taylor, who finished 4-for-5 at the plate with a walk and a stellar five RBIs. Sam Bowman made his return to the lineup after some brief time away with an injury and drove in four runs off a grand slam in the first inning. Bowman finished Friday 2-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored. From the leadoff spot, Bryce Eddington also scored three runs, collecting three hits in five at-bats.
On the mound, Andin Bolen was awarded the start for the Rams, tossing three two-hit innings, while walking four. Adrian Roman managed to pitch 3 2/3 innings from out of the bullpen and Breyton Cornelius was credited with the win on the rubber following a blown save in the top of the ninth inning.
