Avery Harrell Pitches No-Hitter as Softball Splits Doubleheader

Softball Celebrates Alumni Day with Former Players Recognized

UM SOFTBALL FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. - For the second time in as many days, the University of Mobile Softball team split a conference doubleheader, this time against Blue Mountain (Miss.). Prior to the games, the UM Softball program honored returning alumni with a special ceremony which was capped off by a ceremonial first pitch from former player and coach, and UM Hall of Fame Class of 2025 member, Terri McCormick.

Game 1 – Mobile 8, Blue Mountain 0 (5 Inn.)

Mobile dominated the opening game of the doubleheader, securing an 8-0 run-rule victory in just five innings. The Rams jumped ahead with a four-run first inning and never looked back, riding off the back of strong offensive performances by Megan McCartney, who had 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBIs, as well as Miah Simmons who had 3 hits along with 2 RBIs.

The big story from game 1 however was the no-hitter by junior pitcher Avery Harrell who struck out 4 of the 18 batters that she faced. The excellent pitching on display from Harrell was instrumental in Mobile getting the 5 inning run rule victory over the Toppers.

Game 2 – Mobile 3, Blue Mountain 4

Game 2 was a tightly contested battle, but Mobile fell just short in a 4-3 loss. The Toppers took the lead in the 3rd inning, but Mobile rallied back to tie it up in the bottom of the 6th but unfortunately could not hold on and would give up the game winning run in the final inning. Carleigh Bowden was Mobile's best player with a bat, ending the match with 3 hits, a run and an RBI.

Looking Ahead

For Mobile, their next game is at home on Wednesday, March 5th, at 3:00pm CT against College of Saint Mary (Neb.). Mobile Softball will then travel to Gulf Shores to compete in the 2025 Gulf Coast Invitational on March 7th-8th.
