Micheal Azira Named Head Coach of University of Mobile Men’s Soccer

Former Ram turned seasoned professional returns to lead his alma mater

UNIVERSITY OF MOBILE | Mobile, AL - The University of Mobile Athletics Department is proud to announce the appointment of Micheal Azira as the new head coach of the men's soccer program. A decorated alumnus, former professional standout, and seasoned international competitor, Azira returns to Mobile to lead the next era of Rams soccer.

"Returning to the University of Mobile as the head coach for men's soccer is a tremendous blessing and opportunity for my family. We are truly excited to serve the school and be a part of this Christ centered community once again. I plan to lead by example, living out the values of our University and intentionally sharing the love of Christ with our athletes. My goal is not only to continue adding on to the success of this program but also to shape and develop young men of character, faith, and purpose. I can't wait to get to work with our staff and faculty for the success of the Rams Soccer Program." - Head Coach Micheal Azira

A native of Uganda, Azira made his mark at the University of Mobile as one of the program's all-time greats. After graduating from UM, Azira embarked on an impressive professional career spanning almost a decade. He most notably played in Major League Soccer for Seattle Sounders FC, Colorado Rapids, Montreal Impact, and Chicago Fire. His talent and determination also earned him caps for the Ugandan National Team, representing his country on the international stage.

Azira succeeds Daniel Whelan, who leaves the University of Mobile with an overall record of 163-47-16 having served as head coach since 2014, with a prior role as the assistant coach for the Rams from 2009 to 2013.

"We are thrilled to welcome Micheal back to Mobile," said Sally Shouppe, Athletic Director. "He brings with him a wealth of experience from his time playing professionally which we believe will bring great results to our program."

The University of Mobile Men's Soccer program will begin the Azira era in the upcoming 2025 campaign.
