UM Indoor Track & Field Teams Compete In Weekend Bulldog Open

RAMS COMPETE IN SECOND MEET OF THE 2021 INDOOR TRACK & FIELD SEASON

 

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The men's and women's indoor track and field programs from the University of Mobile traveled to the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday, Feb. 13 for just their second meet of the 2021 season in the Bulldog Open. Two weeks prior to Saturday's meet, the teams from Mobile, led by head coach Andy Canegitta, opened the 2021 season in Samford Invitational which was also held at the Birmingham Crossplex.

In Saturday's Bulldog Open, 21 schools from across different collegiate divisions, including NCAA Division 1, competed in numerous events in the all-day indoor meet.

  

Mobile Sees Several Personal Records Broken

Across different events, several University of Mobile Indoor Track and Field athletes broke personal records in the Bulldog Open. With the highest individual finish on the day for Mobile being 4th by Anna Cabrera (SO/Manressa, Spain) in the women's long jump, seeing personal bests recorded is always a bright spot in any meet. Cabrera's 4th place distance in the long jump was marked at 5.45 meters.

For the women's team, Myla Edwards (FR/Brusly, La.) and TaNaja Williams (FR/LaPlace, La.) both recorded personal bests in the women's 60 meters dash. Edwards placed 19th overall with a time of 8.07 seconds and Williams finished 27th with a time of 8.37 seconds. Williams later set another personal best in the women's triple jump. Williams recorded a mark of 10.76 meters and placed 10th.

In the women's 200 meters dash, Jhanya Quinones (FR/Oxford, Ala.) and Samantha Mansur (SO/Dothan, Ala.) both recorded personal records. Quinones recorded a time of 26.21 seconds and placed 21st while Mansur placed 31st with a time of 27.00 seconds even.

Kari Watts (SO/Falkville, Ala.) recorded her personal best in the women's 400 meters dash. Watts finished the event with a time of 1:01.26 and placed 11th, the highest finisher for any Mobile athlete in the event.

Azaria Jones (SR/Birmingham, Ala.) tied her personal best with a mark of 1.55 meters in the women's high jump.

On the men's team, freshman Lance Paquette (FR/Daphne, Ala.) beat his personal best in the men's 800 meters by nine seconds with a time of 2:02.79. Paquette placed 7th overall in the event.

In the men's 5,000 meters, Rider Jernigan (SO/Brewton, Ala.) also beat his personal best by nine seconds with a time of 17:11.21. Jernigan finished 6th overall.

Last but not least, Cameron Alexander (SO/Mobile, Ala.) recorded personal bests in two separate events. In the men's 60 meters dash, Alexander recorded a time of 7.05 meters, placing 6th overall in the dash. Later, Alexander broke his personal best with a mark of 6.60 meters (21'8) in the men's long jump. In the long jump, Alexander finished 8th overall.

Overall, it was a great showing for the University of Mobile Indoor Track and Field athletes as a total of nine student-athletes broke personal records.

  

Back Competing Next Week

The University of Mobile Indoor Track and Field teams will not have to wait two weeks this time for their next meet as the teams are scheduled to compete closer to home in the Carey Indoor Qualifier at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Miss. The meet is scheduled for Fri. Feb. 19.

The Carey Indoor Qualifier is the last scheduled meet for the University of Mobile Indoor Track and Field teams and the last chance to qualify for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships that will take place in South Dakota on Mar. 4-6.
