MOBILE INDOOR TRACK & FIELD COMPETE IN FINAL MEET OF 2021 SEASON
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - In the final indoor track and field meet of the 2021 season, the University of Mobile Indoor Track and Field program saw great success on Sunday, Feb. 21 in the Carey Indoor Qualifier in Hattiesburg, Miss. In the final meet of the season for the Rams, Mobile saw 17 student-athletes break personal records in various events on Sunday and saw one student-athlete qualify for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships on March 3-6 in Yankton, South Dakota.
In the all-day meet, Mobile's Anna Cabrera (SO/Manressa, Spain) recorded a personal best in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.56m (18'3") and placed 2nd overall in the event. Her mark was good enough to qualify her for the long jump event at NAIA Nationals. Cabrera ranks 15th in the country in the long jump as the NAIA takes the top 16.
Women's Results
With Anna Cabrera having a solid day qualifying for nationals, Isabel Valenzuela (FR/Satsuma, Ala.) also had a nice day, placing 1st overall in the women's mile finals and the women's 3,000m finals. In the 3,000m event, Valenzuela set a personal record with a time of 11:13.78.
Joining Valenzuela in first place finishes was Mobile's Azaria Jones (SR/Birmingham, Ala.) and Kari Watts (SO/Falkville, Ala.). Jones placed first overall in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.53m (5'0.25") and Watts placed first in the women's 400m with a time of 1:00.45, a personal record.
Eight other student-athletes from the UM Women's Indoor Track and Field joined Anna Cabrera, Isabel Valenzuela and Kari Watts in recording personal bests. Those results are listed below:
- Savannah Vigor (JR/Semmes, Ala.) - Women's Weight Throw - 11.10m (3rd)
- Michal Rhodes (FR/Kennesaw, Ga.) - Women's Weight Throw - 10.02m (4th) ; Women's Shot Put - 8.29m (11th)
- Indeya Armstead (FR/Loxley, Ala.) - Women's 400m - 1:04.35 (4th)
- Myla Edwards (FR/Brusly, La.) - Women's 60m - 8:02 (7th)
- Shawnessy Edwards (SO/Point Clear, Ala.) - Women's 400m - 1:00.87 (2nd)
- Brianna Page (FR/Pinson, Ala.) - Women's 400m - 1:01.53 (3rd)
- Jhanya Quinones (FR/Oxford, Ala.) - Women's Long Jump - 5.29m (7th) ; Women's 200m - 25.85 (3rd)
- TaNaja Williams (FR/LaPlace, La.) - Women's Triple Jump - 11:00m (4th) ; Women's Long Jump - 5.15m (8th)
Men's Results
On the UM Men's Indoor Track and Field roster, Mobile saw six student-athletes break personal records, with Ethan Cowart (SR/Hartselle, Ala.) placing 1st overall in the men's weight throw. Cowart set a mark of 13.74m (45'1") to claim first place in his final indoor meet of his collegiate career.
Freshman Lance Paquette (FR/Daphne, Ala.) broke a personal record in the men's mile event with a time of 4:54.52. Paquette placed 3rd overall in the finals of the men's mile.
