MOBILE DROPS TWO TO POINT UNIVERSITY IN AFTERNOON DOUBLEHEADER
WEST POINT, Ga. - It was a tough afternoon on the road for the University of Mobile Baseball team as the Rams lost two games to Point University via comeback fashion in an afternoon doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 9. The two teams met earlier in the season, playing a three-game series at Jacobs Field to open the 2021 season with Mobile taking two of three against the Skyhawks.
Point entered Tuesday's doubleheader receiving votes for entrance in the NAIA Baseball Top 25. Meanwhile, Mobile still ranks no. 20 in the rankings.
In the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader, Mobile got out to a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Point managed to push across six runs in the inning to take the lead. From there, Point scored three more runs the following inning and eventually defeated Mobile, 11-6.
In the loss, Mobile's Dalton Rone (JR/Theodore, AL) recorded three hits, including a triple, while driving in one. Christan Poche' went 2-3 with a double as both he and Rone stole a base. In just his third start for the Rams, Jacob Wright (FR/Saraland, Ala.) clubbed his first home run of the season in the game one loss.
Mobile pitching was hit hard as Mobile Head Coach Jon Seymour was forced to pitch four arms in the seven-inning ballgame. Each pitcher gave up at least one earned run.
Following the game one loss to the Skyhawks, Mobile came out swinging in game two, scoring four runs in the first two innings. Point managed to answer back with two runs in the second and one run in the third, but Mobile still had the edge, 4-3, going into the middle innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Skyhawks pushed across three runs to take the lead. Point later scored two more runs to extend their lead, 8-4 going into the final inning.
In the last inning, Mobile began a comeback by scoring two runs, but the comeback fell short as Point defeated Mobile, 8-6 to sweep the afternoon doubleheader and drop Mobile's overall record to 10-6. Point's record also now sits at 10-6 following the two wins over the Rams.
In the loss, designated-hitter Brett Buck (JR/Bay Minette, AL) and leftfielder Christian Poche' (SR/Mobile, Ala.) finished 2-3 for Mobile. Buck managed to record an RBI in the loss and Poche' recorded another double and stolen base.
Mobile again pitched four pitchers with all but one giving up at least one earned run in the defeat. Bailey Sellers (JR/Thorsby, AL) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings while mixing in two strikeouts for Mobile.
After playing a total of six games in the last four days, Mobile will take the weekend off and return to action on Mar. 16 at Jacobs Field. The Rams will host Southeastern Baptist College for a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. CT.
