Box Score MOBILE, Ala. - The No. 9 University of Mobile Men's Soccer team picked up right where they left off the night before and grabbed another win on the weekend with a 3-0 win over Our Lady of the Lake University on Saturday, Sept. 11. The night prior, Mobile defeated LSU-Alexandria, 4-1 for their fourth-straight win and their fifth on the season. Saturday was much of the same for Rams offensively, scoring at least three goals in their fourth-straight match and claiming their fifth victory in a row.
Saturday's win was different for the Rams though as Mobile Head Coach Daniel Whelan earned his 100th career victory with the Rams in his eighth season as head coach. Whelan has proven to be one of the best coaches in the NAIA on and off the field as he has led to Rams to the NAIA National Championship tournament three times and now has a 100-35-10 overall record as head coach at Mobile.
Numerous cheers and "congratulations" poured in for Whelan following the win. Whelan has been given the nickname "Bestie" because of how respected he is and several former players, including current professional players, have sent messages over social media congratulating Whelan following his career milestone. Whelan will always credit the players and their hard work as he never wants the spotlight on him, earning him even more praise and respect from peers. Whelan only wants to win and has sights on the NAIA National Championship banner.
In Saturday's match, Mobile hit the scoreboard in the eighth minute when Zacharia Hasler finished with his third goal of the season after a ricochet off the OLLU goalkeeper. Emman Rahimi took the initial shot after a foul call near the box and the ball bounced off the gloves of the opposing keeper right where Hasler was located.
Four minutes later, Mobile earned a corner kick and punched in their second goal of the match. Sebastian Jorgge took the corner and crossed it perfectly to Angel Almiron who headed it in for the goal. That was Almiron's first goal this season and Jorgge's fifth assist, leading the team. Mobile took a 2-0 lead to halftime.
In the second half, the hot foot of Joshua Bynoe continued as he scored his fourth goal of the weekend in the 73rd minute, the first of Saturday's match. On the week, Bynoe has recorded five goals and has a strong chance to be named the SSAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Bynoe recorded a hat trick in last night's match and leads the team with seven goals this season.
Mobile's 3-0 win on Saturday is their fifth-straight, only giving them more confidence as they head towards conference play. The Rams out-shot the Saints, 18-3 as freshman goalkeeper Ty Turner earned the shutout win, the first shutout victory for Mobile this year. Saturday's match was Turner's first start of the year.
On the schedule, Mobile has just two more non-conference matches before conference play begins. The Rams will play the LSU-Shreveport Pilots on Sept. 19 in Shreveport, La. at 11:00 a.m. CT for their next scheduled match. Following that match, Mobile will host Auburn University - Montgomery, a NCAA school, on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 4:00 p.m CT.
