Box Score MOBILE, Ala. - Almost three weeks have passed since the University of Mobile Volleyball team touched the court for a regular-season match, but the Rams finally returned to action on Friday night, Sept. 17 for the 2021 home and conference opener against Middle Georgia State. In front of a packed and loud Pharr Gymnasium, Mobile swept the Knights in straight sets to go 9-0 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Mobile controlled both of the first two sets with ease, defeating Middle Georgia State in both sets, 25-12. In set three, the Knights showed some life early on, but Mobile's offense would be too much and the Rams took the final set, 25-16.
As a team, Mobile recorded a .299 hitting percentage. Mobile Head Coach Jon Campbell said he would take a near .300 team hitting percentage every match. Brinkley Hearn led the way for the Rams offensively, recording a career-high and team-high nine kills. In just her second year with Mobile, and her first as an outside hitter, Hearn hit .333 in Friday's win in 19 attack attempts from off the bench. Hearn was recruited as a setter last season.
Abby Andrews hit .467 on the night, recording eight kills. Andrews' attack attempts were down through the first two sets before coming alive in the third and final set. She took a total of 15 attempts. Freshman Kiara Garrett also had a nice night offensively, hitting .300 with five kills. No other Ram surpassed five kills in Friday's win.
Defensively, Mobile was led by Melea Meadows, who recorded 13 of Mobile's 41 digs. Meadows was the only Ram to record double-digit totals in defensive digs. Setter Sarah Warren was second on the team in digs and assists, recording eight digs and 13 assists. Freshman Tatum Beech led Mobile with 15 assists on the night.
For the Rams, Mobile will celebrate tonight, but get up early tomorrow morning for another conference match, this time against Brewton-Parker College. That match is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 18. Following tomorrow morning's scheduled match, Mobile will play Spring Hill College later that afternoon at 3:00 p.m. CT. Both matches will be played in Pharr Gymnasium.
